Day 5-Narvik-the sequel

Sadly the sequel, like so many sequels, was a total damp squib.

It started well enough with supper in the Beach House as Horizon just wasn’t appealing.

However it went downhill from there. We had an incredibly long drive to our stop. We had had to miss one because the coach was too big to make the turn and then we were going to stop a second time the guide said the activity was poor so we needed to go elsewhere. That involved turning the coach round which was almost impossible as it was too big and the road too small. But finally we managed and were off again.

When we at last stopped we were in little more than a car park on the edge of a town. We’d driven for 80km but the location seemed little better than being in Narvik as there was still plenty of light pollution. I had imagined trying to spot the Northern Lights from a beautifully isolated spot on the edge of a fjord or somewhere up in the mountains. Not an ugly car park.

We did manage to have a very brief glimpse of lights, but not with the naked eye, only through the camara. We both have photos to prove it. But it was not the experiences we’d hoped for. You can’t help the lack of lights, that’s a natural phenomenon but you can help where you try to see them from.

We stopped briefly once more on the way back but saw nothing. I think we were all grateful to be back on board.

We nipped back to the cabin to dump excess clothing and then went to Champions Bar to buy a couple of glasses of wine as once again we didn’t have to change out of our jeans to go there. We decided to take them back to our cabin.

We are now sitting on our balcony at 12.45 am drinking our wine and being philosophical. You win some, you lose some and we’ve been very lucky with most of our trips to date.
